Designed with a chainsaw

When The Norwegian designer Anna Marie Ofstedal Eng was invited to develop a product for the Designers Saturday Unika exhibition in collaboration with kitchen manufacturer Hamram, she fell head over heels for a 500-kilogram log of Southern Norway oak.

The log stood in her office for quite some time while Anna Marie let inspiration strike, before she picked up her chainsaw.

- In this case, I wanted to make the most of the material, and with a 2.4-meter log, it seemed natural to make a bench. I wanted to highlight the lines in the log. The ends have been cut off, and the rounded, comfortable seating edge reveals the tool behind the creation,” she explains.

For this Norwegian designer, it's about giving the products she makes a personal touch, regardless of the tools she works with.

- I want to show that functional products can be so much more than impersonal machine production. By giving the products traces of the designers' vision, the craftsmanship, and the tools behind them, products can bring joy and create engagement and interest over time,” she explains.
